pacifier

Evelyn and her pacifier is like peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, toothpaste and toothbrush. They just go so well together.

So you can imagine how hard life has been for her as she officially threw all of her pacifiers away this week.
on her way out to the dumpster to say goodbye
On Monday morning when I asked her if she wanted to be a big girl and to get rid of her pacifier she promptly said yes. Then after a minute of thinking about it she quickly said, "oh no, no no!" But when I brought it up a little later she said she DID want to throw them away. (I think in her mind she thought mom would give her new ones after she threw the old ones away......I don't think she quite understood it all, so in that way I wish I did things a little different.) But after tons of praises and treats, I think she was okay with it all.

Monday was the first day in (almost) 3 years that she didn't have her pacifier and I'm so proud of how she handled it. We did have a lot more emotional breakdowns than usual but I had to keep reminding myself that this is normal. Here is someone who went cold turkey on a long established habit and she was just experiencing withdrawls.

I have admired Evelyn this week for her determination and ability to cope with change and loss. She has taught me that I can do hard things, though it may be very difficult in the moment.

To celebrate, I told Evelyn we would have a party. We put up streamers, bought some green icecream(per request) and played at the park.
