2 moms, 10 kids and 5 miles!
11:36 AMSometimes, I have crazy ideas to do things. And sometimes I should just think them and not actually do them. haha! Maybe this was one of the times but it makes for a funny story.
My neighbor, Katrina and I met up at a splash park one holiday while our husbands were working. While we were there, we were chatting about wanting to do something adventurous and fun but not sure what. She had always wanted to do the Kaena point before they left. It's a 5 mile roundtrip hike. I knew it was pretty flat hike and I told her we should totally do it. We both went back and forth if this would be the craziest thing but then decided to seize the day. We packed up the kids, ran home to grabbed a few things and left for the hike. We started it about 12pm. What we didn't realize was how muddy it would be.
So here we were with 10 kids (2 of them babies) and 2 crazy moms set out for this hike. We were trying to steer the kids from the mud but after 1 hour of doing that, we told them to just to run right through it. It was inevitable at that point. The first mile or 2 the kids were doing great and they had friends to motivate them. But after that, that were so done. Since we had lots of day left we tried to get the kids to keep on going and motivating them with lots of treats. The cool thing about this hike was it was up against the ocean so it was fun to spot for whales. At one of the resting spots, we saw a seal come out of the water and rest on the sand. It was amazing. It was literally right by us.....which was also frightening!
We finally made it to the end of the hike and it took us like 4 hours. The only bad thing was it was 5:30pm and the sun would be going down before we would make the 2.5 miles back. So we told the kids to run as much as they could. We are the worst moms ever. haha!
But like we knew, the sun went down and we were still 1 mile away. We also didn't bring any sort of flashlights so it was kind of circus using our phone lights which batteries were almost dead and trying to coral the kids along so we didn't lose anyone. Luckily it was a flat straight path but still, we are pretty crazy at this point.
The biggest tender mercy was we could see a group closer to the water who had lots of light. They were trying to yell at us how to make it to the path back to the cars. But because of the distance it was hard to communicate with them. And here we were with all these kids, most of them crying and wanting to go home so bad, and at one point, I told Katrina, we've got to just go.
But she told me that if they get to our path then we can use their light. And she was so right. After making it to the path and seeing how many kids we had and how many adults were with us, they each split up and walked with some of the kids and used their light all the way back to the car.
At one point, I looked back and saw all these flashlights leading our group back to the car. It seemed like there was more than I remembered. It seriously felt like angels guarding us.
Was it the most crazy and dumb idea; probably! Luckily we were so blessed along the way! We had mud stuck on shoes for days, tons of laundry and husbands waiting back at home that thought we needed mental health but it was kind of fun! ha!
