Ivan Finn
9:53 PMOn November 3rd at 5:15pm Ivan Finn Williams made his debut into this world. He came out chunky, just like we like him! He was 9lbs 5oz and 21in long.
His labor and delivery was a lot different than the other kids but it went so well at the same time. Here's a little recap.
At my 39 week I was not dilated at all nor was I having any contractions. I wasn't sure what to do because a rule at Tripler hospital was that they wouldn't induce until 41 weeks. In order to maximize the most help with Bryan and I my mom here, I was hoping the baby would come before 41 weeks. But all my other babies were late and induced so I was expecting that would happen.
My due date was Halloween and sure enough I was feeling good. At my appt the next day, I was only dialated to a 1. My OB suggested that primrose oil can speed up the process, so I made Bryan go get me some that day at that day. When I look back on it, it was the longest weeks of my life. Those days leading up the due date go at snail speed.
November 2nd was a Thursday and Bryan had mutual that night. Soon after he left I began to have contractions but every 10min. They weren't too painful but I could tell they were consistent. By the time Bryan got home they were a little stronger. I told him maybe I should pack my hospital bag (I'm a procrastinator, haha!) and write out a schedule for Kandi, our babysitter.
I went to bed that night contracting and was able to get a few hours here and there. In my dreams, I could feel my heart begin to race as I anticipated my contraction coming.
The contractions were every 10min throughout the night and by the time 4am came I was wide awake and couldn't go back to sleep.
I told Bryan to go into work because contractions were slowing down. I was frustrated because I thought for sure this was going to be it.
I got my kids off to school and then laid down for a little nap. At this point they were hardly even coming. I took the kids to the park and we ran around for a little bit. I kept running around hoping it would start them up again. ha!
At noon, I began to feel achy and sick. The contractions began coming at every 7 min. And at 1pm, my mucous plug came out. My mom assured me this was a good thing but it still could be hours to a day before anything happens.
Then at 2:35pm my kids came home from school and I was feeling not myself at all. That day President Donald Trump arrived on Oahu and the roads would be shutting down so his motorcade could get to where they needed to go. I was on a group text with my friends responding back and forth updating what roads were closed.
At this point I was laying in bed breathing through contractions that were coming every 5-7 min apart. I had never labored on my own at home and knowing my labors are long with inductions I knew I probably still had awhile.
Around 3:15 Bryan comes home from work and begs me to go to the hopsital. I assured him I probably still had hours of laboring still and with the road closed to the hospital, it seemed pointless to go.
Then a few min later I decided to see if the shower would slow the contractions down. After being in there for 5min, my water broke (awesome place for it to break! ha Definitely the most crazy feeling to have it pop and water gush out) I then screamed for Bryan. I was so scared thinking that maybe I would be having this baby at home.
He came running upstairs and being the calm dude he is, called Kandi and asked her to come ASAP. Kandi was the best and came right away. I got dressed and in lots of pain made my way to the car.
Right as we got into the car, the roads to the hospital opened up and I we made it with no traffic. That whole car ride was extremely painful! My sister, Alice-Anne who I had been contacting back and forth that whole day, told me to count when it gets painful to help take your mind off of it. It totally helped. We get to the hospital at 4pm and at this point I'm bending over in pain with every contraction. Of course we run into EVERY doctor and nurse that works with Bryan. I was so embarrassed and also in so much pain I didn't care. We run into Kathryn, Rian, Bro Huillet, Doctor Pederson. We make it to the 6th floor and they take me to triage. After checking me, they said I was at a 9. I began to cry. I wanted an epidural so bad because I was not ready for a natural delivery. I knew that they wouldn't give it to me being 9cm but luckily they were so kind and quickly got an anesthesiologist. The whole time they were asking me questions, I was so out of it. I tried so hard to be in control of my pain but I couldn't think for the life of me. Even the simplest question as "did you get the flu shot" I couldn't answer it. What was the flu shot? ha!
Luckily Bryan just answered for me.
Then at 5pm I began to push. The pain had worn off a little but I was still very aware that I needed to start pushing (the other craziest feeling)
This time, pushing was so hard. I think it was because I could still feel some of the pain and the fact that he was so big!
I had so many doctors in my room since it was a training hospital. The NICU team even came in and was so surprised to see this was Bryan's baby. I was so out of it and trying to get enough oxygen that the whole 15min was a blur. At one point they wanted his head to crown for a few contractions so my body wouldn't tear as much. Wow!! That was the most painful thing ever!
Baby Ivan finally came out and I just cried. It was so painful all I could do was cry.
All the doctors were so amazed that he was so big! 9lbs of pure cuteness! It took me a while to hold and nurse him because I was shaking so bad and they needed to check his sugar levels. But let me tell you, it was all worth it getting to cuddle and nurse him for the first time. It was pure joy! You can't help but feel like a little piece of heaven in that small delivery room.
Bryan was such an amazing help being so calm and loving during the whole process. He's always been the best cheerleader for me.
I had some amazing nurses and doctors for that short time.
Most of all I felt so grateful to my Heavenly Father for lining up everything to work out SO well that day. After Bryan brought back some food, we chatted about how crazy that day went but also how well it went. Heavenly Father was definitely looking out for us.
